>>16422: 'Why exactly are "citizens" deciding to pay $4 for a gallon of gas instead of $1?'
First, I grant I made that assertion a little too strong. Consumers don't set the price directly, but they do get to decide how much gas to buy at the pump price. The feedback mechanism is not perfect, but at least you get some say.
On the other hand, see if you can find a clear statement of the percentage of the purchase price going to costs, profits, and taxes (federal and state).
I had a lot of trouble finding this; many sources lump costs and profits together, many more use cost per gallon, and at least one source I found used percentages for taxes, and pennies per gallon for profits. Gah.
The best number I could find puts gross profits at about 2.5%, and notes that's been a fairly consistent number over several years.
Federal taxes alone, on the other had, run about 20%. (source: jb-williams dot com/4-25-06.htm )
And many of the production, transportation, and storage costs, including wages, are inflated by heavy handed regulation.
And it is one of Obama's stated goals to make the price of energy "skyrocket", precisely to limit energy consumption.
