A few things that might help get those questions answered faster.
Be specific when you are talking about something - "my mp3 player is broken HALP!?"
- What kind of mp3 player, (brand and model)
- What isn't is doing now that it was before (the reason it is "broken")
- What were you doing to it last, right before it broke.. Did you maybe drop it?.. get it a little wet? try to flash the firmware?!

These all help in determining what can be done.
These rules do not just apply to MP3 players.
Just be as specific as possible and don’t leave stuff out, we want to be helpful here, try not to make it a scavenger hunt for clues!
These same rules apply for other situations like “I got a new motherboard and now my computer doesn’t post!”
-old motherboard model
-new motherboard model
-ram (speed)
and any other component you might have in there (most of the other stuff usually won’t matter but list what you know.

I know the answer to this is going to be really simple because I'm overthinking this or something, but here goes.

I recently bought a second monitor to fill up my empty desk space. I plug my main monitor into my Radeon 5670, and my secondary into my onboard nVidia 650a. On Windows 7, the two monitors worked like a charm out of the box, but on Fedora, whichever monitor I plug into the nVidia 650a isn't detected, and when I open the display settings and click "detect", the monitor still isn't detected.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Have you got anything much in your ~/.xsession-errors?
Or some weird stuff in your /var/log/?

Also, your xorg.conf could be fucked up, but thats really horrible to fix...

I'd say it's more likely that he doesn't have a xorg.conf to begin with. These days most distros seem to rely on automagically configuring X at bot, with better results than writing a xorg.conf, I'd say.

In this case, though, perhaps writing a simple xorg.conf with a "display" entry for each monitor would get things working. Or reconfiguring the xserver-xorg-core or equivalent package with both monitors connected. OP would also do well to tell us what connector he's using - I haven't had much luck with HDMI so far, for example.

Also, if you download Sysinternals process explorer (an alternative task manager, much better IMHO) you can click the little target icon and drag it over to the window and it'll automatically select the process.

Seconded. Process Explorer is fucking great tool for stuff like this, the only reason it hasn't been bundled into Windows by now is because the Windows team are territorial NIH assholes.

All the sysinternals tools are great, but PE is in a class by itself.

KVM Switch Questions Anonymous 12/05/10(Thu)02:45 No. 18210 ID: 3c081e [Reply]

From the research I have done and the limited space I have to work with I believe this is the way for me to go. I have never used anything like this so any help will be appreciated.

I'm using a DVI connection and plan on using that for the one or two other computers I want to connect to this monitor. Analog or HDMI are options, but I'm assuming sticking to one in/output will be simpler. But not using HDMI would mean the KVM switch would need to also switch analog sound, because I'm using my monitors built in speakers. Right?

As for the keyboard and mouse, I'll admit I'm partial to the old ps/2 connections (even if everything is hooked up through a USB to ps/2 adapter). If the switch is all USB will it sort out all the connections and devices as well as I hope? Or would a switch using ps/2 connections be better? I've read some switches support other USB devices also.

Any thoughts, advise, and especially product suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you people of /halp/.

Also price is a consideration here. Especially if I will need to buy a bunch of expensive cables that the switch does not come with.

Typically KVMs are available in multiples of 2 - 2, 4, 8, etc. ports, based on the number of devices attached to them.

Getting a PS/2 KVM will likely be more expensive than going with a USB KVM. Just plan on running USB cables to every computer and then if you want to use a PS/2 keyboard & mouse then you can use an adapter on the KVM's input.

"Sharing" USB devices via the KVM is a bad idea, it never entirely works correctly. It works one of two ways - either it removes the devices from USB when you're on another input (requiring the device to be re-detected by the OS when you switch back to that input) or it "ghosts" the devices within the KVM so the OS thinks those devices are always present (but if you run background tasks that poll the device's status, e.g. printer, those tasks will fail to communicate because the ghost isn't a functional device).

IOGear's KVMs have always worked well for me, plus they're one of the few that actually bother to ship all the necessary cables in the box (Belkin loves to ship you a KVM w/o cables then charge exorbitant fees for the cables).

Here's one, it even has audio support:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817399062

That being said, I prefer to just run all the audio directly into my speakers and then individually mute/control the volume on the PC side. If you don't mind having one PC constantly being on, and have a PC with 6 input/output jacks for "surround sound," you could run all your audio into that PC and use it to manage the audio. Unless you don't have a component audio system that can accept multiple inputs with ease.

That's what I get for writing crap from a hospital bed.

Unless you have a component audio system that can accept multiple inputs with ease.

Also, many 6-jack surround sound systems can make any jack be an input or an output. Hence the suggestion to plug multiple systems into a single PC and routing all audio through it's output into your speakers.

Problem with Vista or HD, I dunno Mr. WarStomp 12/05/03(Thu)03:11 No. 18164 ID: b98bd0 [Reply]

Hey guys,

I was wondering if there was someone out there willing to help me on this. A few days ago my computer was running just fine, albeit a little slow but that's normal. It's Vista Home Premium, I don't quite know the whole stats for it. anyway, a few days ago my computer started acting funny. It started to slow down considerably, programs and windows takes a while to open, and my games tend to lock up and freeze from time to time. Looked it up, and someone said it was this avgidsh.sys thing that apparently slows things down. I had to go through this elaborate thing where I had to make a flashdrive bootable with this AVG program that was able to access the files and either more or rename the .sys files. That didn't work so through it I deleted it them.

It worked fine, avg re-installed, everything was working good. But my game stilled lagged very much. The game is Star Wars The Old Republic, if that means anything. When the game lagged and froze, it took it a good minute or so for it to stop, but during that time rather a full lock up I was still able to move my mouse courser. Finally, the other day I did a simple reset, and everyhtign was running. But then it all started to slow down until fianlly stopping completely. Windows won't respond, nothing won't respond,I can still move the mouse. I did a hard reset, (I think, I held down the power until it was off) and reset it again. this time I took noticed that my hard drive was running and the little process light was flashing. After a few minutes windows stopped responding again, and this time I notice that the hard drive stopped making it's usual humming and clicks, and the process light, which was flashing the whole time, stops.

I was able to get it into safe mode, where I tried to get my files off, did a chkdsk thing, everything that a lot of tech sites have told me, (or at least from what I could decipher, I'm not that tech savvy). Eventually whatever this problem was started to effect safe mode, so in a fit of frustration, and unable to get everything off my computer due to this problem, I did a full factory restore. It goes through the process, finishes, and then gets to the whole starting windows for the first time thing.

It stopped there, with the same problem. Stayed there for like over an hour, so I did another restart. It tells me windows can't start and does a start-up restore. Start up cannot fix problem, and now I'm trapped in this infinite loop. Can't safe mode, nothing.

I looked around some more, people saying it's a virus, some saying my HD is shot, some recommending doing ANOTHER factory restore, so on and so forth.

Is there anyone out there who knows of this, has experience with it, or anything that can assist me? I would very much appreciate it, because my computer is the very last thing in this world I can call my own, and at this momen Message too long. Click here to view the full text.

Install _RIPLinux_ to USB pen. (Just follow the simple instructions, you don't even have to format the stick if it has FAT32.)

Run memtest.
Run badblocks -ns. (Takes a day or two, lol.)

You may do that in X Window System, press right button to get menu and press XTerm for terminal. type these commands. You may run them parallel, use two terminals. Task bar is hidden by default at the bottom of the screen, just like in windows.

While you are at that, you may also nicely and graphically mount your windows partition to recover any files to the USB pen, which you also need to mount; it has similar identifier as the hard drives, but it is usually the last one of them. (That is hda1, hda2, hdb1; pen is hdb1.)

I've primarily been a Windows user all my life - but I'm getting an itch for a "New coat of paint".

Are there any alternative, free OS out there structured for the average user? Basically I'm looking for an OS with a mouse based UI, and can run Windows programs (mainly games, and FL Studio) either natively, or through something like Wine?

Inb4 Install Gentoo - Even that would be fine, it there's a version that meets my criteria. I wouldn't even know what I'm looking at. I'm well versed with hardware, but as far as an OS other than windows, I couldn't tell you it's ass from it's elbow.

Wine is not perfect, still it can run many games. Do not expect it to run everything perfectly, it won't. I have a Windows install for games and a GNU/Linux install for everything else. You should consider doing the same.
Many GNU/Linux distros are made for end-users, like Mint and Ubuntu. Ubuntu made a few unfortunate UI choices lately, though.

Here's what I'd do: read http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major , download the distros that look good, try them using a live-cd/usb (so you don't have to install anything).

OP, an OS is merely the tool you use to run programs. If you're going to install a different OS and then look for ways to get it to run the same programs you were running on Windows, then just save yourself the trouble and stick with Windows. Otherwise you're just making things more complicated for yourself for no good reason.

>an OS is merely the tool you use to run programs.
When you need a tool do you use the first one you find or try to find a tool suitable for the job at hand? Although change for the sake of change may be a waste of time, it can happen that the change was indeed for the better (or for worse, but in this specific case if he uses a live-cd all he has to do is reboot and everything will be as before).

Audio for playing media isn't working Anonymous 12/05/07(Mon)05:47 No. 18198 ID: def84e [Reply]

halp, I just installed windows 7 on a dell inspiron 530, and after installing some codecs and directx, I can't play any audio from media files, ie mkv or mp3. I then tried fixing it by installing the actual driver for sound card, not the windows default hd audio. Whenever I try to play a mp3 file, wmp and winamp give me an error, "problem with sound device; error code 800700C1" and "bad direct sound driver" respectively.
I was able to play mp3 on wmp before installing k-lite and directx 11. If I try to use windows media center, the program itself will play sound, but when trying to play an audio file it give me this error "your audio hardware is not available".
Also: games won't play audio also.
Sound Card: Realtek (dont know what version)
I've been trying to get this shit going for hours, any help would be great.

Why, exactly?

How about downloading the latest driver direct from the manufacturer and give that a shot before attempting to fix your cnet-infected download.

CNet infects files with mal/adware now, you really shouldn't be downloading anything from them.

Crap, it's true.

Just get the drivers direct from the manufacturer. Even if you're behind the great firewall of China, they have a Chinese download site just for you.

Also, I hope you didn't use some internet-sourced "Windows Black" bullshit media for the Windows 7 install.
