We interrupt your scheduled bickering for this important announcement: Understanding /phi/

  • What this board is:
    • A place to discuss epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, metaphysics, and logic, in a general sense, or in an applied sense (in sex, science, vidya, your mother).
    • A place where not only is being a pretentious, hubristic dickhead is allowed, but is considered the norm.
  • What this board is not:
    • It is not /b/, /x/, or /rnb/.
    • A place to spew incoherent nonsense and verbal diarrhea.
    • A place to make claims with no justifications (and "because I say so" or "because you're gay" isn't a justification).
    • A place where the global rules do not apply.
An inability to follow these conventions will result in a warning!
Repeat offenders will be banned!

This question depends entirely on an individual's opinion. A lot of religions have it as a sin and I think it is an instant 'straight to hell' pass in christianity.

It is certainly very selfish as it can really fuck with the minds of your family and friends you leave behind. But if it is your only escape from your pain then maybe it isn't wrong for you. I think there are a lot of other options out there before suicide. Like everything in life it is very much based on the situation the individual is in.

Although now trying to think of a situation in which is completely wrong is eluding me. What if some guy kills himself because he knocked some girl up and doesn't want to live with the responsibility of raising the kid; that could a wrongful reason for suicide in my mind.

Say you have an island in a very remote expanse of wilderness. You can start a civilization on it if you want. There are no building codes, no enforced regulations of any sort, no law enforcement presence whatsoever. Even the surveyor & tax assessor just handed you the docs and said they weren't going to venture all the way out there. Remote. Food is plentiful, the growing season is decent, you're on a body of water full of fish with no competition. You can build a civilization if you like.

What do you build? Do you design great artistic structures and trade stoneworkers residence on the land and a comfortable residency in exchange for their labors? Or do you leave it in tact, and just enjoy the place as nature made it? Do you invite your smartest cleverest acquaintances to make it their creative asylum / second home / place to raise offspring? Or keep it for yourself and die on it quietly in peace, willing it to a national park? Do you kidnap a hundred kids to populate it with, and build some crazy mad scientist shang-ri-la tribal culture on it from scratch? Choose your favorite dead language or just make a new one up and learn it all together? Eschew western materialism for lives dedicated to finding inner peace? Bring a sci/phi library as lessons learned from existing civilizations collapsing...

The possibilities are endless.

...this island is not theoretical.

Good question OP. Thanks. I'd combine nature and technology in a mutually beneficially way. Renewable energy. No deforestation. No pollution. Bartering system. Leave most of it untouched. Redo school systems to actually teach the truth/ morals, and not what rich people privilege their cattle in knowing. Redo social some social taboos for the holistic benefit of mankind. For instance, have ignorance be taboo instead of the truth, so that people who speak it won't get shot. Those are just some ideas.

2 questions, perhaps they are the same thing, perhaps not.

1. What is the ultimate aim of intelligent life?
2. What should be the ultimate aim of intelligent life?

1. If life is 'matter capable of self-causation', and intelligence is a particular type of causation (rational, or factual), then it's ultimate end should be the greatest possible level of self-causation. That would include the aforementioned 'immortality', but wouldn't be limited to it. Basically, omnipotence (or archipotence)

2. Pretty much the realization of 1).

Anonymous 12/05/17(Thu)07:35 No. 7109 ID: 8fc2a3

OP here. Answers like "to eat" I wouldn't consider valid. I think if you asked the average person what their ultimate aim is, they might say something like "to become CEO of my company" for example. Things like "to eat" are necessities to life, and though one may spend even a considerable amount of time towards the goal of eating, it may not necessarily even be on the radar as the ultimate aim. I consider eating something I have to do, in order to live, so that I may do the things that I believe are more important to my own self-growth as well as what I can contribute to others.
Now, to clarify, when I mentioned intelligent life, I didn't just mean humans on earth, but any sort of intelligent life in whatever form that may exist in the universe.

1: to watch jersey shore.

2: to face the truth no matter how difficult, and act in accordance with the newly gain knowledge. Also to help all others down to their very roots. Also become beings that don't destroy nature (including ourselves), but instead help it.

The discussion in the beergarten always begins with daoism, but winds up in discordianism, which eventually gives way to accordionism, and with any luck and a bit of dancing, ends with a dirndl over yer face.

I read a news report once where someone left in a suicide note that he was killing himself purely out of boredom. Whether or not this counts as a counterexample is up to you, but it could also be likely that he simply lied in his suicide note.
I think the best answer to "why do people do ____" is
"Lots of reasons"

matter cannot be created or destroyed but only changes form, the same is true of energy, but when our body changes to the point it ceases to function it is no longer able to channel energy into the form of our conciousness/soul and just as our mass breaks down and becomes something else (grass, daisies, trees, vultures or whatever eats us) our conciousnes/soul disperses and becomes other energy. actually most likely it stays with our body until our body changes form. in other words most human souls are split up and transfered into maggots and bacteria or divided between a few vultures (tibeten sky burial) if your lucky you'll be eaten by something awesome like a bear. but in the end your soul will be scattered throughout the earth and maybe even space. the fastest way to disperse it is creamation, congratulations your soul just became heat... though ashes still contain energy so use it as fertilizer or you leave a part of your soul in an urn.
