Up until a couple months ago, I had always thought that I sucked at physics, and had grades to corroborate. Then I found this book to the left: the Resnick/Halliday/Walker. All of a sudden things made sense in class and my grades shot up. Right now I'm lightyears of ahead of my class in physics. So my question textbooks does /sci/ reccomend for physics, chemistry and math?

This is now the textbook and and book request thread

1. Halliday and Resnick ROCKS! It just does. Its a great book. I use it for my college classes, because it was clear.

2. Best book on Particle Physics, Unfortunaly there is not a book, but there is a website that was one NATIONAL EDUCTATION AWARDS. (and its FCKING GREAT)! (I SWEAR TO GOD I WET MYPANTS!

“The day when two army corps can annihilate each other in one second, all civilized nations, it is to be hoped, will recoil from war and discharge their troops.”
– Alfred Nobel

Joke's on you Mr. Nobel; that didn't happen. What sort of weapon would man have to invent, which would backlash so fiercely, that nations would stop producing it?

I have a hard time imagining weapons much more destructive than a nuclear bomb, they come in all shapes and sizes.

Personally I often find weapons from science fiction to be much more terrifying. Instant liquidfication and so on (War of the Worlds, Ditrict 9)

Think of what happened during WW I and WW II.

Both sides in WW I used chemical agents as a weapon of war. It was so horrific that during WW II. While both sides had the weapons they were afraid to use for fear of the enemy using them back. So during an all out war both sides didn't use some of their most destructive weapons at their disposal.

That being said I think that is a good argument against just because nukes were in the equation it kept the cold war from going hot. It also doesn't mean that nukes were not the cause. Try not to put war in such a black and white picture.

It's always something that stops working.

Today StarOffice crashed three times, lost (a total) of 3 A4. Then when firefox crashed when i uploaded my files to dropbox. IN JUST ONE SESSION. ITS ALWAYS SOMETHING THAT FUCKS UP

This.
What operating system is it?
I use Linux and LibreOffice and it all works flawlessly. The only annoyances I get at the moment are from using Cinnamon DE, because it's a young project, but they're minor enough to put up with until the software matures a bit.

Howdy all,

I'm starting a YouTube channel to teach folks Java, XHTML, CSS, and other things for free. Have several vids up now, hoping to get it over 300 by year's end. If it sounds like something you might be interested in, please check things out. Thanks for your time, 7chan! You give better discussions than that other chan. . .

I became a scientist because I've been encouraged in the field since I was a child. It was a lifelong and fulfilling interest my father supported and I grew up watching all kinds of science, nature, and adventure shows, and of course Star Trek. Halfway through college, the university stuck me in geology when the geography program shut down. They thought it was a better fit and I suppose they were right. Sad to say though, professionally I cannot be a scientist. All a geologist can do is work petroleum and you do that for the money, not for the science. In short, start with child-like idealism, end up sucking dick in the rat race like everyone else.

Since when geologists can't work at research institutes and do science for a living?

Since I live in Texas and currently don't have a graduate degree. You'd be surprised just how much the oil and gas industry dominates my field here. Doesn't matter, I'm working on a graduate degree, so I'll get to do science in a couple years.

It’s hard to find comedy gold like this, however this is priceless

http://www.tysknews.com/Depts/Metrication/trouble_with_the_metric_system.htm

Apparently a true American tries to show the failures of this evil satanic scientific metric system and fails horribly.

Best parts:

1) Arguing that centimeters are not part of the metric system!
>"Centimeters, while in common usage, are NOT officially recognized metric units"
LOL WUT.

2) Actually trying to measure something using 0.1 mm obviously not understanding that this precision is not actually possible with human hands.
>"In metric notation this would be 1219.2mm by 2438.4mm."

>A long time a go in all the kingdoms far away (from America) lefties were considered evil. Knights and warriors were trained to hold their weapons in their right hand, the RIGHT hand, the only hand good enough to smite the lefties with.

No, it's because the majority is right-handed that the left-hand was considered evil. Try to even do the dishes with wrong hand.

That's pretty much synonymous with what I said.

The left had was considered bad because more people were naturally good with their right and people who predominately used their left hand were considered bad as a result.

In my late night grappe-fueled stupor, I seem to have become caught up in all the colorful allegory, and skipped over the relevant part of the story, which is, the early migrations out of Africa are finally being recognized to have happened much earlier than previously thought. Pretty neat. Badly posted tho, I'll grant you.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain how to do the following question. I know it's conditional probability.

You roll 2 fair dice. Find the probability that the first die is a 4 given that the sum is 7.

So much fail in this thread.

The fact that the question says "first die" is (of course) crucial. It is telling us that the dice rolls are discreet events (d1 and d2). Order matters. And we can distinguish d1 from d2.

"Given that the sum is 7" means we aren't taking the probability of all 36 combos of 2 rolls. Only the 6 times that the dice add up to seven. It is "given" that the sum is seven. It is certain. If we were taking the probabilty out of all 36 combos given would be replaced with "and".

d1+d2=7
1+6=7
2+5=7
3+4=7 <-
4+3=7
5+2=7
6+1=7

Message too long. Click here to view the full text.

why is there so much analyzing and math here? If the sum is seven it means the second die can be either 1,2,3,4,5 or 6.
The first die will be the number that goes with the second to make the sum of 7, which can be 1,2,3,4,5 or 6.
The probability that it's 4 is 1 in 6.

The probability of A given B, P(A|B), is equal to the probability of A and B, P(A∩B), over the probability of B, P(B).
P(A∩B) == 4/162 and P(B) == 4/27
(4/162)/(4/27) == 1/6

Don't mind me, just using actual statistics.

I'm not a scientist but I consider myself scientifically minded. I look at food as fuel and eat what is necessary. It began many years ago as a combination of boxing training (diet is very important) and playing video games in which food had different "Stats" and junk food was just nonsensical as it gave you debuffs.

Anyways, I've never known anyone that is 100% "mechanical" in their diet like me. I expected it to be common among scientist types but teachers, professors and graduates I speak to don't really give a shit. Some were even obese.

So, what's that about? Seems only athletes give a shit. Personally I don't see the logic in eating bad fuel, it's like pissing in the petrol tank, no?

Eating high quality food and maintaining a high level of physical fitness is necessary for anyone who wishes to improve their mental performance. Anyone who says they are too busy to eat right or work out is a damn fool. Anybody who says bad food tastes better than good food is either mentally or physically deranged, perhaps both.

I've met way too many fat scientists, and it's rather disgusting. The body is a singular system, you can't maximize any part of it without improving the other parts as well. The smartest athletes I've met have been the most athletic, and the fittest scientists I've met have been the most mentally capable. Why are people who are so smart capable of being so stupid?

>>13673
The problem with fast food is not that it doesn't have enough calories. The problem is that it isn't a balanced source of nutrients, and the ingredients are of poor quality. The meat they serve is known to increase cancer rates if eaten on a regular basis, and most of the flavoring is artificial.
